In the style of Beckett, Ionesco, and Adamov, who came from different tongues and languages and chose – without prior agreement among them in the post-World War II era – to write their theatrical texts using the French language, we note that Abdulaziz Baraka Sakin has chosen to compose this theatrical text employing the English language instead of Arabic, the language of the nation to which he belongs by birth and culture. Not only did he share with these Western writers in adopting one of their tongues as a support for expression and depiction, but we also find him participating with them in combining within his writing both the realistic and the surreal, achieving thereby a form of intellectual abstraction. This is particularly evident in the issue posed by this play and the urgent drive to address it, namely the problem of killing and displacement faced by many peoples and nations in Africa and the world. Through the anonymization characteristic of the theatrical characters, as none of them bears a personal name, the author endows them, and their problematic issue, with general human traits. The realistic element is manifested in the play “Beware of Schrödinger” through the characters’ rootedness in African upbringing: the living dead man and the thin young man coming from Sudan through Libya and the Mediterranean, heading across the Alps towards England. Meanwhile, the Bedouins are crossing the Sahara Desert, while the police and judges are entrenched in the Western sphere, appearing as caretakers guarding and maintaining the borders and sovereignty of Europe. The surreal, elevated to an abstract level, is embodied in the main character. This is because his four lives render him a wondrous and strange being, meaning that they make him a being divergent from the natural entities in people’s reality.
