I ran as fast as I could, my breath rising and falling in a rapid, tense rhythm. The post-afternoon haze clouded my vision, but I didn’t care. The pomegranate trees planted along the dusty path seemed to race towards me, as if they wanted to embrace me, to pat my back in an attempt to calm me. I was panting, terrified by the thought of what, or rather whom, I had left behind, and even more so by the state I had left them in. My heart beat wildly, madly, as if possessed by a demon, a demon I imagine to look like me. Darkness began to creep in, swallowing the last moments of safety I had left. I finally stopped, my heartbeat mingling with the sound of my panting and the last calls of the birds before they settled for the night. I bent over, clutching my knees with my hands, trying to catch my breath.
